The power of inclusive design
Whether you’re scouting for opportunities or working out ways to solve problems, if you want to produce truly groundbreaking designs, bring together the most diverse range of people that you can.
I suffer from a hero complex.
I see a problem and I want to be the one who goes in and fixes it.
Get in. Get it done. Tick. Next.
But the problem with this approach is that I’m liable to have a limited perspective on a problem. I might be able to draw from my own experience, but if that experience is lacking, I’m liable to start guessing what people need.
And guess what? Guessing leads to bad design.
A better way to approach a problem is through inclusive collaboration.
Bring together a diverse group of people who bring a broad range of experiences, perspectives and ideas to a challenge.
Armed with these 3 sources of knowledge and insight you can
- Identify the anti-patterns that lead to poor experiences faster
- Discuss perspectives to gain deeper insights into why something happens
- Bring together unexpected ideas to address insights in ways that truly differentiate themselves from the competition
Inclusivity isn’t just the right thing morally speaking, it’s a HUGE advantage in your ability to learn and adapt, to find new markets and to discover new ways you can delight people in completely unexpected ways.
So next time you have a problem, don’t go it alone.
Bring an inclusive group of people together and help everyone to be heroes.
